Earth Day has Deep Roots!

Every April 22nd, millions of people around the world unite to celebrate Earth Day—a global movement that reminds us of our responsibility to protect the planet we call home.

The Beginnings of Earth Day

By the late 1960s, environmental damage in the United States had become impossible to ignore. Oil spills, polluted rivers catching fire and declining wildlife. Public awareness was rising, but there wasn’t yet a unified voice demanding action. That changed in 1970, the first Arbor Day! On the last Friday in April 1970 over 20 million Americans—from students and teachers to workers and families—took to streets, parks, and campuses to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward.

The success of that first Earth Day led to major environmental reforms in the U.S., including the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passing of important laws like the Clean Air ActClean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act.

A Global Movement

Earth Day quickly expanded beyond U.S. borders. In 1990, it became a truly international movement, mobilizing 200 million people in over 140 countries. Today, it’s the largest secular civic event in the world, with more than a billion people participating every year.

Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

You don’t have to join a protest or organize a rally to make an impact. Here are powerful ways to make a difference on Earth Day

Protect Your Trees Year-Round: Keep your trees strong, healthy, and beautiful in every season by joining the Arbor Source Tree Maintenance Program. It’s a proactive way to care for your trees and invest in the environment right in your own backyard.

Reduce Waste: Ditch single-use plastics, recycle, and compost.

Support Sustainable Brands: Shop from companies with eco-friendly practices.

Vote and Advocate: Support policies that protect the planet and hold leaders accountable.

Learn and Share: Educate yourself about environmental issues and share what you learn.

Conclusion

Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder that our choices, actions, and voices matter—and that a sustainable future depends on what we do today.
